本片讲述了十九世纪初期，祖鲁人反抗欧洲殖民者战争初期，一个英军要塞被围攻并且反击胜利的故事。

历史背景：
祖鲁战争——以长矛对抗枪炮的悲壮篇章
祖鲁战争指19世纪30—80年代南非祖鲁人为反抗荷兰后裔布尔人和英国殖民者的侵略，维护国家的统一和领土完整而进行的英勇斗争。战争结果虽然是祖鲁王国灭亡，英国确立了对南非的殖民统治，但祖鲁人所表现出来的前仆后继、英勇顽强的民族精神赢得了世界人民的称赞，在南非人民反抗殖民侵略的斗争史上谱写了可歌可泣的篇章。

祖鲁人是南非土著居民南班图人的一支，居住在南非的纳塔尔、斯威士兰和莫桑比克的一些地区。18世纪末和19世纪初，南班图人处于原始社会瓦解、部落联盟兴起和国家产生的社会发展阶段。1817年，南班图人部落联盟的酋长丁吉斯瓦约战死，祖鲁人恰卡（1787—1828年）成为首领。他在军事上继承和发展了丁吉斯瓦约的改革，建立了一支约10万人的军队，以长矛和盾牌为武器，采用方阵、两面包抄等战术；在政治上把3000多个分散部落约50万人统一起来，削弱各部落酋长的权力，各地由军事长官治理。

这样，恰卡建立了祖鲁王国，英国人称其为祖鲁帝国或祖鲁兰。1828年，丁乾（1797—1840年）上台执政，继承了恰卡的事业，恢复和发展了生产，保持了祖鲁国家的统一。正是在他的领导下，祖鲁人进行了反对布尔殖民主义者的战争。
